Millner Letters

10.3.1914                The offside of the same lock was broken in a similar manner by the steamer VICEROY, Captain E Wenlock on 10.3.1914 as reported.  We have just replaced same with a new oak balance  Millner/Thomas

1.2.1915                  At 6.45 am on 29th January steamer PRINCE Captain Edwards ran into the  inside bottom lock gate and broke the balance beam near the breast..  The accident occurred owing to the steamer not answering quickly enough when the engine was reversed and as no strap was used the gates had to stand the blow.  The balance was a pitch pine one and new in 1906.  We can repair to last a few months longer.

not dated               Dear Mr Millner, On arriving at Cosgrove I found that steamers QUEEN & VANGUARD had followed the iceboat and were prepared to go on tomorrow, so gave instructions for your Cosgrave boat to make an early start for Fenny and wait there for orders.  Steamer VICEROY and butty had left for Blisworth so get them through to Braunston if possible and then stop.  We arrived home at 4.25 having had a good run though on the cold side.  Gordon Thomas
